General

All these workshops will take place at Myerscough Equestrian Centre, near Preston, Lancs., (www.myerscough.ac.uk) which is a superb venue with wonderful facilities that which we are extremely lucky enough to have access to. We are able to offer a plenitude of working from life, on a variety of horses – all colours and all builds and personalities!

All work can be under cover if necessary – although there will be opportunities for daylight work as well. Complimentary tea and coffee will be available at each workshop and there will be a “base” to keep painting and sketching equipment for the duration of each day. Participants will be able to use the “Equine Café” situated in the same building or bring their own food.

This year’s workshops are built around Understanding the Horse as a subject although each session can easily be taken as a “standalone”.

Please bring your usual drawing/sketching and painting materials – and a camera, as well as your usual working surface (paper/ drawing board/ easel etc). Outdoor clothes and outdoor shoes are a good idea! The occasional limited materials (specific to the teaching) are supplied.

The teaching day is fairly structured, with an emphasis on a relaxed and friendly approach. There will be opportunities to work closely from life and to really get to know your subject

30 Apr 06 The Standing Horse

As artists, we need to “know” our subject matter – to be convincing – whether representational or abstract – anatomical knowledge will make our image stand out.

  • Skeletal and Muscular Anatomy
  • Conformation – the differences between horses’ “builds”
  • Variations on the standing horse – resting hindleg, the Stay apparatus, the relaxed horse, the alert horse.
  • North West Arab Show will be one of our reference materials. Wonderfully expressive animals with plenty of opportunity to put into practice the earlier theory work.
25 Jun 06 The Horse’s Gaits

Horses move in a particular way – patterns of leg movements has remained unchanged for thousands of years. Muybridge photographed horses at their different gaits. You can view from life in a controlled and tutored session. Wonderful opportunity!

  • Organs of Locomotion
  • How Anatomy creates and sustains movement
  • Explanation of the Horse’s paces.
  • The “Gaited” Horse (as different to “gaits”!)
29 Oct 06 Colourful Horses

Mixing the colours for the variety of the equines’ coat colours can be a challenge – particularly on a sunny day, where there is shadow or where the coat colour seems to change as the horse moves. Colour can be such fun, and a challenge with answers awaits!

  • Colour mixing for the colours of nature
  • From the application of mixes to the representation of horse’s coats
  • Shadows and shine
  • Hair colours and texture
Others planned for 2006
  • The Jumping Horse – an examination of this exciting but brief equine action.
  • The Horse at Liberty – just what do they do together and how can we portray that
  • Shadows and Shine – examining the changes in tone on the equine subject
