Robin Furness is a very well known and
respected painter in the North of England. He was helped
in his earlier days by Tom Carr and Peter Biegel. His
knowledge of painting and the countryside is truly
amazing and his willingness to share is humbling. He was
Master of the Bedale Hunt for many years and still
follows hounds on four wheels rather than four legs.
Robin manages to capture the feeling of 'the moment' in
his paintings which are beautifully composed in a style
reminiscent to Lionel Edwards. He has lectured for
NADFAS and the NACF on the history of open air painting
and on artists such as, Alfred Munnings, Edward Seago,
Harry Becker, Corot and Constable.
Carlshead Farms produce Llyn sheep and
coppiced willow for bio fuels. Our host, Gareth Gaunt,
breeds Polo Ponies and has a selection of lovely
homebred horses on the farm. These include ponies in
work, youngstock, brood mares and his Quarter Horse x TB
stallion, Sovereign King (Billy). By the time we visit
there should also be a couple of foals, so there will be
plenty of models available. (For more information about
the venue, see their website:
www.carlshead.co.uk).
There are some open fronted barns looking
out over the valley, so there will be no problem if it
rains
Our venue is
set high above the River Wharfe with a glorious view
across
some of the best of the Bramham Moor Hunt country. The
valley, with its meadows and ancient earthworks, makes
an excellent setting in which to concentrate on horses
within the landscape.
Robin will divulge many trade secrets that he has gained
over the years on how to capture the light and moving
horses quickly.
He will help you to achieve a pleasing landscape sketch
within a couple of hours, while the light and shadow are
constant, showing you how to develop ‘speed’ in painting
outdoors and how to fit the horses into the landscape.
You will be encouraged to work on a series of small oil
sketches and will be shown how to then take those
further to develop a larger painting.
He will begin by demonstrating the preparation of
materials and the advantages of working on a tinted
ground. The second day will begin with a half hour
lecture, with slides.
Suggested equipment:
Sketchbook, watercolours or oils with several small
boards/canvases and a larger one, chair, drawing board
or easel.
Cost: £40 per day, or £70 for
both days, including £20 non returnable deposit. (Non
SEA members £45 or £80 for both days)
We hope also to organise some sort of ‘get together’ on
Saturday evening – not included in the cost of the
course.

by Saturday May 15th to:

PLEASE NOTE!!! No form or
fee – No place! Recently people have become very casual
about booking and turning up for workshops. Tutors,
venues and catering all have to be booked and paid for,
so a £20 non returnable deposit is included in the fee.
Unless forms and payment are returned it is very
difficult to plan ahead, arrange catering or know
whether the workshop will be financially viable -
workshops cannot be run at a loss.
How to get there:
Carlshead Farms, Paddock House Lane, Sicklinghall, Wetherby, Yorks,
LS22 4BL
From the A1 at Wetherby: Take the A661 into Wetherby,
turning left after you cross the bridge. Continue
through the market square and past the church until you
reach a large fork in the road. Take the left fork
(Linton Road). Follow this straight up the hill out of
Wetherby (DON’T turn for Linton) and then follow the
Sicklinghall Lane to Sicklinghall. Go through the
village, past the cricket ground (on your right). The
road swings left and Paddock House Lane goes off to the
left just after a big house. There is a sign to
Carlshead Farms. (If you reach the riding school you
have overshot!) Follow the lane about ½ a mile and you
come to Carlshead Farm. There is plenty of parking near
the barn.
From Harrogate: Take the A61 south, then, at the
roundabout south of Pannal, take the A668 east. Take a
very sharp right junction (Follifoot Lane) to Kirkby
Overblow. Go through the village and continue along
Barrowby Lane and Kirkby Lane towards Sicklinghall.
Before reaching the village, turn right into Paddock
House Lane (just after the riding school on your right).
From Knaresborough: Take the A668 west, then as above.
