HUNTING SHIRES GROUP
September Workshop: Sat Sept 20th 2008
The Hunting Shires Group will be
holding a workshop on Saturday 20th Sept 2008 at
Sacrewell Farm & Country Centre. Malcolm Coward has
kindly agreed to be the tutor.
Sacrewell Farm & Country Centre
is home to a Shire Horse Society Centre, with 11 resident horses
ranging from a yearling to the Waldburg (formerly Brookfield)
Shires, which you have probably seen at major shows both in harness
and under saddle. Elspeth Ross, of Waldburg Shires, will provide us
with models, including a horse in harness. Some of the horses may be
working around the farm (giving dray rides) on the day and it is
possible that some may have to other engagements, so they may not
all be at home. If you tire of Shires the farm has beautiful old
buildings, including a working watermill with mill pond. Other
residents include ponies, a donkey, chickens, ducks and turkeys,
Soay and Lincoln Longwool sheep, pygmy goats, cattle and pigs. Vera,
the Saddleback sow who lives next door to the Shires is due to
farrow on August 2cnd, so there should be lots of little piglets!
Three cows are also due to calve in August. When I visited last week
a red kite was flying over, green woodpeckers were feeding their
babies and there were swans and wild geese.
Venue address: Sacrewell Farm &
Country Centre, Thornhaugh, Peterborough, PE8 6HJ
Sacrewell
is on the A47 eastbound, just a large clover field away from the
A1. Look for the brown tourist signs at the A1/A47 junction at
Wansford just north of Peterborough.
