24th February 2006

Education, education, education, that’s the ticket!! And this year’s diary is packed full of it!

Starting with a military theme, ending with a military theme, and I am not ashamed to say, a trip to visit THE KING’S TROOP, somewhere in the middle of the season. How devastatingly heavy you may think, but to lighten the diary up I have included a visit to a small donkey sanctuary near my house so that we can have a pub lunch, and maybe a visit down the road to see Ardmore (our big Irish boy who lives in a truly Stubb’s-like environment) once again. Also on the cards, the chance to watch some of England’s finest of side-saddle riding, at a National Show, (loads of lovelies swishing by keeping our history well and truly alive!).

As ever, I would be very grateful if you phoned as soon as possible to stake your claim to these days, especially the King’s Troop visit as numbers are restricted to 25, and I need to hire a coach to transport us from the Barracks to Wormwood Scrubs to watch the practice with the guns.

  • Thursday 19th April. The Animals’ War exhibition at the Imperial War Museum.
  • Tuesday 5th June. The King’s Troop, St. John’s Wood.
  • Tuesday 19th June. Donkey Sanctuary at “Ambers”, Kiln Lane, Hastoe, Tring.
  • Saturday 4th August. National Side-Saddle Show at Addington. This takes place over 3rd, 4th and 5th if you are interested in additional days.
  • Sunday 2nd September. The Horse in War, at the National Army Museum, Chelsea. This is also held on Saturday 1st September, but I have a cricketing husband!!

All workshops begin at 10am-ish and finish at 4pm-ish, except for the King’s Troop who require us to be there at 7.30am!! For those who wish to have a bed chez moi prior to this early start, hurry to bag a bunk!!

The cost of each workshop is still £20.00, but the King’s Troop visit still needs some looking into as we need to split the cost of the coach. I may waive my fee for this one, because we also need to DONATE at least £5.00 each as a charitable contribution towards the horses’ upkeep.

Now let me give you a little more information on each event, to hopefully whet your appetite.

  • The Animals’ War

I have enclosed a brief description, taken from the internet, as a taster, which mentions mules, camels, elephants, dogs and cats as well as horses.

  • The Donkey Sanctuary

Here is Fred, aged 28, waiting to welcome you!

  • The King’s Troop

There is a sheet of information here which was used as a handout at an event that took place last year, which will help you to understand more on the day of our visit. Sorry about the homework, but it will make everything much clearer on the day!!

  • The National Side-Saddle Show

This particular weekend, will be one for the ladies!!!!!!!!!

To really understand the ins and outs of the habit and tack we can visit the saddlers and inspect this combination, which is a rare sight these days. Many other stalls available.

Addington is a fantastic place well renowned for Dressage.

  • The Horse in War

This family show takes place over the road from the museum in the leafy green park, and absolutely stunned us last year that such a well ridden, well enacted number of snippets of history should take place, loud noises from the weapons and all, in a beautiful part of London!! Clare, my daughter, managed to get to ride one of the camels, and was asked to help train the younger ones!!

This is a clip from the National Army Museum website.

Horse In War

So here it all is, a full summer’s programme yet again, which I hope will inspire you to pick up the phone and book in, SOON PLEASE, and meanwhile a warm welcome to the new members of the Watford Group.
