Information provided by Kristine:
"The latest SEA Newsletter contained my report on the October workshop at
the Light Cavalry Stables in Windsor, with Sally Martin SEA in attendance.
I know that if you were there in October you’re probably keen for a return
visit, and a few people who weren’t able to attend on the day have asked
if I would be organising another. This is to let you all know that I have
just sorted out the details for a workshop at the same venue on Friday
12th May 2006, 10am – 4pm. Because the deadline is fast approaching, and
the next SEA newsletter won’t be out in time to advertise it in there,
this information is going out to all the London/Windsor Group members
individually, and I’m asking Bruce to put it on the website. But please
spread the word to friends and acquaintances who you think would enjoy
this, as it has a rather specialised content . . .
"We all know that, as equestrian artists, we need some
understanding of equestrian anatomy to inform our attempts to draw, paint
or sculpt horses convincingly. For this workshop I have managed to secure
the services of one of the country’s leading practitioners of equine
sports massage, Pennie Hooper JMI SMT, for the morning. Pennie will
explain the structures beneath a horse’s skin, drawing diagrams of the
muscles onto the coat of a live horse. Then we can watch our model in
motion and ‘see’ what’s happening with the muscles; we can sketch, take
photographs, and ask questions. Several examples of horses will be brought
out so that we can discuss with Pennie the difference between good and bad
conformation (and what to emphasise or disguise in our artworks). Pennie
has worked with the British Olympic Equestrian Team; she treats many top
dressage horses, race horses, and their riders. She has written a
best-selling book ‘Sports Massage for Horses’ (with a few illustrations by
yours truly), published by Kenilworth Press, and is soon to begin a UK
lecture tour. This is a fantastic opportunity to take part in a very
intensive and focussed learning experience, with someone who really ‘knows
her stuff’. So don’t delay if you’d like to book a place – I’m expecting
lots of interest!
"After the morning session there will be a chance to
look at (sketch, photograph etc.) the horses in the yard when we break for
lunch. Some polo ponies are stabled there for the season, so plenty of
variety on offer. There will be no pub-lunch this time - we’re
concentrating on the art - so it’s a ‘bring your own picnic’ day.
"In the afternoon, no lesser person than the Commanding
Officer of the Light Cavalry will pose for us, on horseback, and
resplendent in full uniform! How good can it get?!! (keep your lipsticks
handy girls). We should have about two hours to get out our paints, and,
when looking at the horse, perhaps test out how much information we have
absorbed from the morning!
Cost for the day will be £35.
Get in touch
ASAP to reserve your place.
If May 12th isn’t possible for you,
but you’re eager to sample the delights of the Cavalry Stables, Jackie
Henderson of the Watford Group is running a workshop there on 16th June.
As ever, all SEA members are welcome to attend workshops and events
organised by any of the group coordinators, so watch out for details in
the next newsletter, and on the website, or contact Jackie directly.
(25 Apr - Deleted - workshop no longer being held)
For those of you who haven’t yet ventured forth onto an
SEA workshop: if you’re the slightest bit nervous, (perhaps you feel you
won’t be as good as everyone else . . . ) for goodness sake, don’t worry
about it! We’re all there to learn, and you’ll find we’re a very friendly
bunch, and no-one will judge what you do. I haven’t made arrangements this
time for a Full Member to come and dispense advice on matters artistic,
but there will be people around who can help. I’m not a Full Member
myself, but I do teach (demos, workshops, one-to-one tuition, OCA
tutoring, etc.). Just let me know if you’re not too confident and I’ll
keep an eye on you, or point you in the direction of someone who knows
what they’re doing. Just come along and see how much fun it is!
And finally: you’ll see I’ve managed to get around to
putting everyone’s addresses onto mailing labels. The list I’m working
from is quite old, and unless you’ve joined the Society within the last
two years there may be a few changes that I’m not aware of. Therefore, if
you want to update me with your contact details – including email
addresses, because it would make contact so much cheaper and easier – I’d
be glad to hear from you. Also, if you haven’t been paying your subs and
want to be taken off the contact list, let me know that too.
Hope to see you soon,
Kristine
