Windsor Group Photo Opportunity

Location

HAC Stables, Windsor Great Park

Date

27 Sep 03
Additional Details Please let Debbie know (email/telephone no at top) if anyone is interested. The HAC Light Cavalry are having a uniform inspection on 27th Sept at the stables in Windsor Great Park, Junc 6 M4. The HAC is the Honourable Artillery Company and are a TA branch of the army. The light cavalry are the mounted section of the group and usually take part in parades etc. They recently formed a guard at the Cartier Polo and also take part in the Lord Mayor's parade in London. They are planning for the uniform inspection day, horses and riders all dressed up and inspected by a high ranking officer.

This to take place on the practice polo field (they share land with guards polo stables), hopefully also some displays such as tent pegging and a jumping comp. If anyone would like to go let me know, especially if you like a man in uniform) I can take a few 'friends and family'. If there is a great response then I will ask them if more of us can attend. Before I do this I  wanted to gauge interest. (Some pictures below - click for larger view!)

Windsor Group Autumn Workshop Location Guards Polo Yard, Windsor Great Park

Date

4th and 5th Oct 03

We are lucky to have Malcolm Coward agree to do a day and a half at the workshop. Mal in his usual style will be there to help and advise, and if can be persuaded to do a demo.

The workshop will be at the Guards Polo Yard, set in Windsor Great Park, with the Castle on the horizon and tucked out of view of cars passing through the park.  Sharing the same yard is the livery stables of the HAC (Honourable Artillery Company) Light Cavalry. Paul Allison, the HAC yard manager, and ex-cavalry officer himself, has kindly agreed for up to eight artists (plus a tutor) to hold a workshop there over the weekend of Oct 4th and 5th 2003. They have some nice ‘old fashioned’ type horses, mostly bays with a very pretty dapple grey, and one Irish draught.

These photos were taken recently at the yard and at Smith’s Lawn where the Light Cavalry were asked to form a guard for the Queen at the Cartier polo. Sadly the Queen did not attend but the men still turned out a fine sight. (click each for larger version)

The proposed workshop agenda is:

Day 1

  • Start 10.00 (tea/coffee)

  • Introduction to workshop and rules of the yard.

  • Talk 15-20 minutes from Paul on anatomy

  • 10.30 to 12.30 - Work from life

  • Lunch (local pub)

  • 2:00 to 5:00 (with tea break) - Work from life.

Day 2

  • Start 10.00 - Demo by artist of painting outdoors from life, and work until 12:30 .

  • Lunch (local pub)

  • 2:00 to 5:00 (with tea break) - Work from life.
5:00 – review of work and workshop

  • 6:00 pub or home.

There is a large urn of hot water for tea/coffee. An indoor school if it gets wet (although we may have to share a sectioned off end if there are any lessons), otherwise it is a soft red brickyard, and two loos! There is plenty of parking.

The cost is £40 for the two days as this is a first workshop; this does not include lunch, but includes tea/coffee, biscuits, and cake.  I will also ask for a contribution for the person holding the horse, although if anyone has a willing helper to do this then that would be even better.

I can seek out accommodation for those who might need it and am also happy to do supper on Saturday eve for those who would like it, this will be in Putney SW London (straight in on the M4 from Windsor) and will be a fun way to review the day and get to know each other, plus enjoy a few bottles of red. I just have enough room for 10 at the table.

Please confirm with Debbie  that event is on before setting off!
