Arena Racing Company (ARC) has generously agreed to sponsor The Silk Series Best Racing Picture by a Female Artist Award at the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA) Summer Exhibition 2017 (10-16th July), at Palace House, Newmarket to recognise female artistic talent.
A shortlist for the award was selected at the Society’s Summer Exhibition Private View on Monday 10th July at Palace House, Newmarket. Four finalists will then go on to a public vote, with the successful artist being chosen in time for them to produce a piece of work celebrating The Silk Series and female jockeys. This will be presented to the overall winning jockey of The Silk Series after the final race on Ladies’ Day of the St Leger Festival at Doncaster on 14th September.
In addition to the commissioned artwork from the SEA female artist, the leading female jockey at the end of The Silk Series will be awarded the ‘The Tufnell Trophy’ in memory of Meriel Tufnell MBE who was Great Britain’s first Female Champion Jockey in 1972, a feat she matched in 1973 along with also becoming European Female Champion Jockey.
ARC Director of External Affairs and Women in Racing Committee member, Susannah Gill, said: “The Silk Series seeks to celebrate pioneering sportswomen and provide an opportunity for them to showcase their talent across our racecourses. We are delighted to partner with the Society of Equestrian Artists so that this award can provide a unique opportunity for a female artist to have their work recognised and celebrated as part of The Silk Series.”
- A £1,000 commission to paint a commemorative work for The Silk Series winner.
- An ARC Corporate Membership with access to all ARC courses during 2018. This special Metal Badge offers free admission to 16 ARC racecourses (front row access to racing action… easels welcome, with prior permission).
