Sophie Whitaker

Sophie is a self-taught artist with a passion and fondness for drawing horses. She was never fortunate enough to have horses at home, despite learning to ride at a young age – so she started drawing them instead! It wasn’t until much later on in life that she had the privilege of owning her own horse, and has been involved within the equestrian community in one way or another since.

Sophie is a serving member of the British Army, a Captain in the Royal Artillery, and a member of the Army Arts Society. Sophie was actively encouraged to promote soldiers’ art within the armed forces and wrote a blog during her tour of duty in Afghanistan. From there onwards she has exhibited her art at the Army Arts Society annual exhibitions at the Young Gallery in Salisbury, and also at the recent ‘Going to war exhibition’ at Westminster Abbey, where she won the prize for best serving war artist.

A watercolourist at heart, Sophie is exploring other mediums and sculpting whilst trying to find time to build up her equine art portfolio. Her particular equine genres are; military horses, hunting, racing, polo and the Arabian horse.
