There was an air of
excitement and anticipation amongst the twenty artists from Ireland,
north and south, who arrived on 29th October at Danescroft
in Lisburn, Co. Down for the launch of the Ireland group. Danescroft
is a racehorse livery yard and the workshop took place there due to
the kind permission of George Stewart.
The day commenced
with a welcome from myself as the S.E.A. contact in Ireland and
I took the opprtunity to thank all those who had made it possible to
set up this group. I then introduced the S.E.A. chairman, Caro
Lyle Skyrme who had travelled over from London for the occasion .
Roy Miller SEA had flown in especially to conduct this workshop. The
artists were keen to start sketching and drawing under his expert
eye and helpful advice. |

The first subjects
were racehorses who behaved perfectly as they circled the artists in the
indoor school. Then there was a total change as top
Irish dressage rider Yvette Truesdale, splendid in her top hat and tails
and riding her young horse 'Wishful Thinking' gave a
spectacular display which for the artists was a really stimulating experience. |

After lunch
the well known and highly respected veterinary surgeon Bruce
Steele gave the artists a fascinating and informative talk on the anatomy
of the horse using Yvette Truedale's horse 'Wishful Thinking' to
illustrate the points he felt were important for all equestrian artists. Then
with an improvement in the weather the last session of the day moved
to the outdoor arena where Kate Lee produced her hunter ‘Max’ to
be the last model of the day. The artists worked with enthusiasm and
produced some interesting sketches and appreciated Roy
Miller's comments on their work. |
