I only joined the SEA earlier this year and this was the first workshop I had the opportunity to attend. As instructed,
I arrived at Tattersalls by 9.30 am.The first person I bumped into in the car park was Cyril Winfield.I had never met
him before and had only spoken to him briefly on the phone, but somehow I guessed he was one of the equestrian
artists. We got chatting.I explained that I was new and looking forward to learning a bit and meeting other people
that shared the same interests. We wandered up to the sales paddocks and met several other members including
Neil Cawthorne and Dick Barton, who, over the next couple of days, were to provide some tuition.
After saying hello we all wandered off to do some drawing.I found a quiet spot in the sale ring.I have sat drawing here before and find
it comfortable, inconspicuous and sheltered from the elements. The day was becoming hot and sunny,so a shady spot was just the order.
At lunch time we met up again in the car park, had something to eat, then drove up to Newmarket's July racecourse in convoy. It was
the first day of the July meeting and was pretty busy.As before, most of us wandered off alone or in pairs to do some work.I headed
for the bar and sat down with the race card and vodka praying that none of the others would spot me...! I didn't want to give the wrong
impression.I used to work in racing and enjoyed a moment to myself reminiscing about the times I had hung around racecourses waiting
for "my" horse to run.
I eventually wandered back up to the pre-parade ring where I saw Cyril and Stan beavering away.As it was very crowded, this was probably
the only place you could comfortably get on with some work.Cyril was painting and Stan was drawing the horses for the next race being
led around the trees.I used to hate leading up here, the horses always seems to get wound up.Seeing the two of them hard at work
inspired me to get my pencil out and I managed to spend about half an hour drawing before we all left, just before the last race.I live
only 35 miles away so went home for the night.
We met back at Tattersalls at 9.30am the following morning. It was a mixed sale.Yesterday it was brood mares, with or without foals at
foot, and today horses out of training.Neil and Dick looked at our previous day's work and gave some of us a few pointers before we
all went off to do some more painting and drawing. At lunchtime we all set our work out to see how we'd been progressing.I picked up
some very useful tips.Once we'd eaten we drove into town to have a quick look at an exhibition of local artists in Palace House. From
there we visited the Bedford Lodge Hotel where Roy Miller was displaying some of his work.Neil brought out a jug of iced water, which
was gratefully received - it was another hot day.We spent some time wandering about looking at Roy's paintings and chatting until
someone suggested we all go to the bar.So we ended the 2-day workshop by having a relaxing drink and a good chinwag as one by one
we left to go home.
I had thoroughly enjoyed attending my first workshop with the SEA.Everyone I met was very friendly and the advice I received relevant
and practical.I'm looking forward to the next one.
